CAMBODIA Tourism | My Personal Adventure Stories

I wrote this post a few weeks ago and have being meaning to post it since then, apologies for the delay! 🙂

Sadly Cambodia is the last country we are visiting in south-east Asia. The history of Cambodia is dark, most recently, 1975 led by Pol Pot, the Khmer rouge carried out a campaign of mass killings. Some of the main leaders are still on trial today for crimes against humanity & war crimes. Surprisingly though, in modern day Cambodia, the people are some of the most upbeat you’ll ever meet. In my experience they have been gentle warm and friendly.

Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is the capital city if Cambodia and due to the country’s recent history, the most popular tourist attractions are the killing fields and the genocide museum.

We hired a Tuk Tuk (a local motorbike taxi) and spent a day visiting the sites. It really isn’t for the faint hearted as the tours explain in detail what the Cambodian people endured and some of the sites both at the killing fields and the genocide museum are truly shocking. Entrance to the killing fields cost $6 and includes an audio tour. The voice of the audio tour is the story of a survivor of the killing fields and gives a first hand account of what happened.

The city of Phnom Penh is really interesting to explore with the royal palace, temples, weekend night markets, the Russian and central market. There also newly built shopping malls, bars and restaurants and really clean and modern hostels in the backpacker area. Tourist’s can also volunteer to help out at the local orphanages.

One thing about Phnom Penh is that the locals throw all their rubbish at the end of the day onto the street to be collected. After around 6pm in the evening the streets resemble small dumping grounds, making it difficult to avoid rats when walking around!

Sihanoukville

After Phnom Penh, we travelled 5 hours south to the city of Sihanoukville, a small fishing village becoming more and more popular with tourists. Sihanoulville has many bars and restaurants and also the popular tom cat cinema. The cinema has been running for the last 8years and for $4, you can rent a private air conditioned room and choose from hundreds of new and old movies. A great alternative from a night on the town.

Sihanoukville is a gateway to get to Koh Rong island, host to the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. Tourists can book am open ferry ticket to get to koh rong. The ferry options include a fast ferry for $15 which takes 40mins or the slow ferry for $10 which takes 2hrs and 30mins. However you decide to get there , it is worth the money. Stepping onto Koh Rong island is like travelling back I’m time. There are no roads on the island so everything gets carried along the beach on carts drawn by water buffalos.

The electricity on the island runs off a gas powered generator and is only available between certain times. Usually around 4pm till 1am, after that its torches and candles to get around. There is lots to do on koh Rong island for example hiking, snorkeling, diving and fishing. We choose to go snorkeling as neither of us had been before. A group of 6 of us left around 1pm in a wooden boat out to a nearby smaller island, the water was crystal clear , we could see coral and some small fish, which we later caught and bbq-ed on the boat before heading back. It was an amazing experience.

Siem Reap

We spent one night in Phnom Penh and then took a 6 hour bus to Siem Reap where we spent 3 nights. Siem Reap is a very tourist town and is quite lively but without being tacky. Its main street for nightlife is called pub-street and has many bars, restaurants and markets with great street food. The main tourists attractions in siem reap are angkor wat and the Cambodian circus.

We managed to win two tickets to the circus on a pub crawl so got in for free! The circus is acrobatics only and was a great night out! On our last day in siem reap, we got picked up from our guest house at 5am to get to angkor wat to see the sun rise, it was definitely worth it, it was absolutely beautiful watching the temple light up. After exploring Angkor wat, we ate breakfast in the local 007 “license to coffee” cafe. We then did a small tour of the other nearby temples, including the temple where tomb raider was filmed!

We are really sad to not only leave Cambodia but leave Asia behind. We have one more stop in Bangkok, en route to Sydney and that concludes the first leg of our adventure.
